Another Milestone

Can someone please tell me why I didn't know what to do with myself, alone, for three whole hours today?! Yep, you guessed it ~ all of my little pumpkins headed off to school today. Morgan, in all her 9 year old glory, walked out to the bus like the seasoned 4th grader she is. She was excited to meet her teacher, see her old friends, and get back into the routine of the new year. As I kissed her good-day, she smiled and said "I'm nervous, Mom. But I get to see all my friends!" My little butterfly. She's grown and changed and transformed before my eyes ~ going from a precious, special little girl into a precious, special young lady. But I still get choked up every year when I have to put her on that school bus. Then there's Ethan. I was excited when we registered him for Kindergarten earlier this summer, as was he! I was nervous, too, because Ethan is not your average-every-day-type kiddo ~ he is a Bennett, after all! (And I won't even mention some of the things his Papaw did at his age.....but I digress.) We also know our Ethan is not the largest of children, but obviously, Michael and I have never made this an issue. So, we're taking our turn at the registration table, and the lady taking care of us says "Wow! You're not Ethan! Who's Ethan?? How old are you?" Uh, excuse me? As if I wasn't already secretly concerned about his size and how the other children would treat him. Now I have to convince a school official I'm not trying to enroll my 3 year old into Kindergarten. Anyway, back to today. We headed out to the bus stop, me trying not to cry, and Ethan looking conspicuously tiny wearing his gi-normous backpack. I kissed both older kids good-day, and waved with all the other parents until the bus was out of sight. My heart felt like it weighed 900 pounds. Two of my babies in school. But I wasn't done yet. After seeing Morgan and Ethan off, it was time to take Miss Sophie to her pre-school. We walked into St. Peter's school, Sophie bouncing along in her gi-normous backpack. (Why can't they make a teensy-tinsy backpack that actually holds, like, a handwritten copy of War and Peace?!) I walked Sophie to her classroom, where her two super-friendly teachers greeted her and showed us where to hang her things. I gave her a kiss and told her I'd be back soon ~ Sophie said "I love you mommy, BYE!" and ran off to play with her new classmates. I headed home. I was sad today, but I feel good knowing that my children are confident enough to go out into the unknown without me. P.S. I didn't color-coordinate the children on purpose, but don't they look smashing?! ;)
